Google marks Gemini's images twice: once where you can see it, and once where you can't. Understanding both layers explains why cropping the corner logo achieves nothing — and what "removing the Gemini watermark" would actually require.

Generate an image in the Gemini app and you'll usually spot a small mark in the corner. That's the layer made for humans. The layer made for machines is SynthID — Google DeepMind's invisible watermark, embedded into the pixel values of the image while it's being generated. Google applies SynthID across its generative output, and it's the reason the Gemini AI watermark question has a more interesting answer than "just crop it."

Can the Gemini watermark be removed?

Split the question by layer and the honest answer falls out. The visible corner mark: yes, trivially — cropping or inpainting removes it, which is exactly why it was never the real label. The SynthID layer: not cleanly. It's designed to survive ordinary editing, only Google's detector can confirm whether it's gone, and degrading an image far enough to destroy the signal means visibly degrading the image itself. Any service that promises guaranteed Gemini watermark removal has no way to verify its own output.

Checking works the other way, though: Google operates a SynthID Detector portal, and Gemini itself can be asked whether an image carries the mark.
